The point is, you can find a piece of 0.0 thats entirely deserted. I've been ratting in a particular system of 0.0 for a week and didn't see a SINGLE person in local all the time.
Gatecamps work both ways - if the gatecampers don't care for a particular 0.0 system themselves they won't go there, and their gate camps reliably keep everyone else out once you're in.
The problem with all that is of course that while much of 0.0 is deserted, you can't sell your loot or do anything really without access to stations. Player-owned stations are just a gigantic space mousetrap I find cause you usually can't dock and get ganked. NPC stations aren't much better, camped and dangerous to be arround IMHO. Might do relatively fine with insta-undock BMs ... maybe ... which brings me to a question I have: Could players put bubbles at 0.0 NPC stations and if not, why not?
The other type of fun in 0.0 for solo players is being nimble and in a dirt-cheap ship. Fit an executioner or a probe with an MWD, put a small or medium secure container in, respectively, fit stabs and/or inertia stabs. Make bookmarks 160km from the belts in a busy 0.0 ratting system. Then zip arround and collect the leftover loot from the spoiled people, salvage their BS wrecks etc., this is by far the easiest way to get decent cash as a low-skillpoint player. Beats cruiser mining and level 1 missions by far.
And for the record, I learned the same lesson, having had my ratting raven ganked in 0.0 after three minutes by a blob of 15 ships (and having lost it mostly due to being lagged to death). Hence, if cash is a concern, use cheap frigs for the above tactics, or if ratting is your thing scout for a quiet place, then bring in an AF or maximum a Drake, and scout ahead for gate camps the first jumps into 0.0 with an alt.
